This event aims to identify key policy and regulatory issues and ethical challenges associated with the use of Artificial Intelligence, and other emerging technologies, in education. By bringing together interdisciplinary expertise this huddle will explore the complex interrelationships between AI, education, and public policy with a focus on Algorithmic Impact Assessments.
The idea is to explore the potential of an Algorithmic Impact Assessment (AIA) specifically for the education context. AIAs are a tool for policymakers and practitioners to assess possible societal impacts of algorithmic systems like AI both before a system is in use, as well as after application. The key outcome is a collective auditing prototype for education, that we will utilise as the basis for further research and development with cross-sectoral stakeholders.
The Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre (SSSHARC) sponsored this event: a collaboration between the Education Innovations and Digital Societies initiatives. Professor Kalervo N. Gulson, Professor Terry Flew, Dr Teresa Swist and Dr Fiona Suwana convened the event. Twelve participants from the following stakeholder groups were involved: academia (University of Sydney, University of Technology, and University of New South Wales), industry (The Gradient Institute), and a non-government organisation (Tech Council of Australia).
